Vital Tested: Wild Workout
We trained like cavewomen.
Before cars, fast food and iWhatevers, we were a pretty buff species. Hunting, gathering and ducking predators made every day a serious workout.
That's the theory behind Wildfitness, a training style that mimics moves our ancestors might have made. Philippe Til (pictured), America's only Wildfitness-certified trainer, took us back in time:
- Toss the shoes. If you can't bear barefoot, check out Vibram's FiveFingers.
- Swing your arms. We lifted a weighted bar over and behind us, opening desk-stiffened shoulders.
- Re-learn to "crawl." Lying on our bellies with arms extended, we lifted our legs and tried to crawl in place, a little like this, correcting slouchy posture and strengthening abs.
- Jump for the trees. We did burpees, improving our explosive movements (hint: focus on height, not on legs).
- Lift rocks. Or in this case, kettlebells (iron weights). We learned how to hinge from our hips--and shocked ourselves by hoisting 54 pounds.
- Throw punches. We boxed (gloves and all), rediscovering natural movements and strength we didn't know we had.
Call us "girls gone wild."
