In the Night Market

Send to a friend
Yamashiro's own booth, Yamasata, offers $6 gourmet tacos.

This new farmers' market has the best atmosphere in LA.

Atop a winding road, high above Hollywood, stands an 88-year-old Japanese treasure: Yamashiro. Once a private residence, the "mountain palace," with its unforgettable views, is now one of the city's fanciest restaurants. And starting on Thursday nights from 5PM-9PM, it's home to an exquisite farmers' market.

Yamashiro Garden Market, launched by Nick Spano, is an experience that's had us talking for days. What not to miss:

  • Dinner. Yamashiro introduces "Yamasata," its own market booth, where chefs prepare food using market-sourced ingredients. For $6, we enjoyed miso-sake marinated black cod tacos and exotic salsas at an outdoor table with a show-stopping view.
  • Japanese produce. Yasutomi Farms produces Japanese veggies including pink Japanese tomatoes ($3/lb.) and Japanese spinach ($1.25 per bunch).
  • Raw honey. Klausesbees beekeepers sell local, unfiltered honey from flowers including alfalfa, avocado and buckwheat, each tastes unique.
  • Gelato. Bulgarini is such a hit among foodies that they travel to Altadena for it. Get three scoops for $5 (we recommend the fruit sorbets).
  • Whole bean organic chocolate. ChocoVivo invites you to do a free tasting of its complex, stone-ground chocolate. The only ingredients are beans, raw sugar, and if flavored, fresh spices, fruits and nuts.
  • Raw Cane SuperJuice. We're fans of this "sweet" cleanse.

Valet parking is $2 (instead of the usual $7.50).

An unbeatable bite on the town.
