Taberna Mexicana

Send to a friend
Taberna Mexicana's ceviche is light and flavorful.

This new spot puts a fancy spin on South of the Border.

Mexican cuisine is a favorite of ours, but a tough sell when we're trying to stick to a diet. At Taberna Mexicana, Chef Alex Padilla has taken familiar flavors and given them a creative spin. We fell in love with the ahi tuna ceviche (pictured), a sesame- and serrano pepper-spiked treat served atop jicama "tortillas." The filet mignon tacos on homemade corn tortillas (served separately, so you can control how much filling you want) were outstanding, accompanied by house-made vegetable pickles. On the even lighter side, look for the grilled shrimp chopped salad with yogurt dressing. Save room for the plantain, yucca and blue corn chips, which are delicious on their own (though the guacamole is fantastic, served with pumpkin seeds). Skipping the chips? Spend your calories on the spicy Mexican flourless chocolate cake (it's small but dense with a wonderful, panna cotta-like texture; we took home half).

Appetizers: $7 (Chile con Queso) - $12 (Ahi Tuna Ceviche)
Entrées: $12 (Chile Relleno) - $34 (Prime Ribeye)
