Sticks and the City
In-the-know urbanites are on a roll.
The newest mode of transportation for the hip and fit: a longboard and a Big Stick from Kahuna Creations. Invented by So-Cal surfer Steve McBride, the trend has finally migrated east. Here, McBride gives Manhattanites tips on catching the wave:
• Get sized up. Head to Paragon Sports where pros can help you pick the right stick and board. "When you’re standing on the board, the land paddle should come up between your chin and forehead," suggests McBride.
• Start slow. Paragon will let you practice on the sidewalk out front to make certain you've got the right gear and the basic moves, like learning to slow down by dragging your stick. (Check out these videos for more advice.)
• Hit the open road. Head to a flat spot of Central Park when it's less crowded. Try Monday through Friday, 10:00AM to 3:00PM or after 7:00PM or before 7:00AM, when roads are closed to cars.
This is a workout you'll want to stick with.
