Push It
Slide to the left, slide to the right.
While the next Winter Olympics is a few years away, we decided this is our chance to start practicing for the big time. So we packed our figur(ative) skates and headed to the UES' Physicalmind Studio for a workout that's been used to train champions, and claims to burn more than 500 calories in 55 minutes: Cardio SlideBoard.
The SlideBoard (imagine the surface of an ice hockey table) has been employed as the off-ice method to shape up ice skaters, speed skaters and hockey players. While your editor may lack the 'ability to ice skate' gene (she grew up in Florida!), she was gliding with ease.
After just two minutes of sliding--you'll be wearing special booties--your editor felt her heart pumping. The SlideBoard targets the lower body, especially the quads and inner/outer thighs, thanks to the squat-like sliding stance. And you'll develop a strong core: you have to if you want to avoid slipping! Check out this video (click "Cardio SlideBoard") for a peek at what to expect and try this skating squat at home.
We give it a 10.
